Charlie feehan had a very hard life with the loss of his father at an ealier age and living in poverty. He need to support his family. Living in the cold streets of richmond charlie had to run to keep himself warm, so every night charlie ran through the streets of richmond and before he knew it he knew richmond off by heart, he could run it with his eyes closed.One day charlie left his mum and young brother to go to school but, charlie didnt, he wanted to put his talent of running to good use, so he went to a job interview as a delievery boy for a crook, Mr sqizzy taylor a.k.a the turk. he took the job interview to get him and his family out of the slums for good. To get the job he wanted he needed to complete a footrace with a number of other kids. Charlie wins without himself knowwing and makes a new friend norman heath.(nostrils). Charlie starts his job under squizzy taylor and enjoys it and get payed reasonable well. But at home Mrs feehan has had trouble with an old friend of Mr feehans,, Mr peacock, Since Mr feehan past away Mr peacock wanted to be more then friends with Ms feehan,, he would hit and abuse her.and charlie didnt like what was going on so charlie let rage out on mr Peacock.
When things started getting better for the feehans. so did with norman heath. Norman got a contact with the richmond footy club. Charlie when to normans first game and while he was there he met a girl called alice, Charlie liked alice but was too shy to tell her about it.
Then Charlie had to collect money from alice's father failing to pay up charlie help them out by putting some of his pay in. So charlie becomes better friends with alice and her familyCharlie feeling he needs a challange he starts to train with cecil redmond his nextdoor neighbour to became a boxer. but he doesnt like it very much instead he try's for the ballart mile foot race and starts train with Mr redmond for that.One night charlie needed to do an illegal liquor run and found out the bad side about his job. He asked norman to help him deliever the liquor and they ran into a snagg. Barlow one of the boys charlie bet in the footrace to get the job for squizzy, started beating up norman and charlie slipped through and had no chose but run away. Charlie feeling bad for his friend decided not to work for squizzy taylor anymore. So charlie quit under squizzy's empolyment and nearly got shot in the process. Charlie was not running for squizzy anymore he was running for himself!
After all hard work charlie makes it to the ballart mile footrace and puts all his money that he worked hard for on him winning. And it pays off for him and he can support his family and himself!
